Steuben County Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial are coming together with Corning’s Southside Neighborhood Association for Building on Faith Week 2017. Thrivent members will work alongside local Habitat affiliate volunteers in construction and non-construction activities to impact housing needs. Events will begin on Sept. 16th at 1st Street between State St. and Walnut St. Volunteers are needed from 9:00 AM to noon, and from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

This week is an opportunity for Steuben County residents, churches and faith communities to use hearts and hands to serve their neighbors. Close to 100 volunteers are expected to attend the local events. These will include a number of tasks from making improvements to the neighborhood to helping coordinate volunteer activities. They are designed so that anyone who wants to improve a place to call home can participate. A free T-shirt and lunch will be provided to our volunteers. Please contact us at volunteer@habitatcorning.org if you would like to participate!

Non-construction tasks include:

  • Coordinating volunteers
  • Material distribution
  • Assist at the ReStore
  • Food service
  • Landscaping
  • Other tasks as needed

BIG thanks to NY HOPE Church!

We wanted to thank the members of NY HOPE Church who came out to Pritchard Ave. recently to help us finish up at the project. They painted our basement, and helped finish up the garage and outside areas. Thanks for all the hard work, friends!

If you or your group would like to volunteer on the job site, please visit habitatcorning.org/volunteer for more information.

Steuben County Habitat to hold Kids’ Day!

The event will be held at Denison Park on Saturday, 26 August from 11AM to 2PM, and will feature games, face-painting, food, and 50 FREE school supply kits (pictured above). Parents can find out more about our homeownership program, and meet our current partner families as well. No reservations necessary, but it will be first-come, first-served. Hope to see you there!

Welcome Home, O’Konsky Family!

Jess O’Konsky with Drew and Jillian.

Steuben County Habitat for Humanity is once again welcoming a family into a new home, and it’s all thanks to the efforts of local volunteers and the generous support of the community. Jess O’Konsky and her two children, Drew and Jillian, will soon be able to call the renovated house on Pritchard Avenue in Corning their home.

“This home was sold to us below cost to help us help a family from the area find somewhere affordable to live,” said Lisa Caracci, Executive Director of Steuben County Habitat for Humanity. “The new homeowner worked alongside Habitat volunteers in renovating the interior and improving the exterior, and we think it turned out a great place for a young family to live.”

Project Manager Mitra Pratt described the renovation work, which started in January, saying, “we put in a lot of work to make the house more modern, and more suitable for a younger family. Our volunteers did a great job, the house looks fantastic, and we can’t wait to hand over the keys to the O’Konsky family.”

With work nearly completed on the four-bedroom home, Steuben County Habitat for Humanity is ready to celebrate another family’s moving in with a dedication ceremony. Said Caracci about the event, “we really love the dedications; it gives us a chance to thank the volunteers and the community, and to show what we were able to build together, and it allows everyone who was involved a chance to celebrate.”

The dedication ceremony will take place at the home, located at 183 Pritchard Avenue, at 6:00 PM on July 12th. The public is invited to attend and learn more about the process of becoming a homeowner, as well as how they can help build homes and support local, deserving families here in Steuben County.

Steuben County Habitat for Humanity builds strength, stability, and self-reliance for families in our local neighborhoods. Our mission statement is, “seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, community, and hope in Steuben County.”

Help move our next future home by clicking HERE.

We’re finishing up our latest build project, but instead of working on-site, we’re moving our newest home to Corning—by truck! We will be shipping our latest build project from its construction site in Coopers Plains to Hamilton St. in Corning. That’s  6.9 miles, or 12,144 yards to relocate such a big house!

GST BOCES working on our next home!
A work in progress….

We are fortunate that this year, we could partner with GST BOCES and the students of the Building Construction program. But we can’t make this happen without your support. Can you sponsor our home and help us move an entire house from our build site to its new location? Every donation will provide a place to call home for local families, and make much-needed repairs available to current homeowners facing critical or emergency needs.

Last year, Steuben County Habitat for Humanity was able to build and rehabilitate 13 homes in our community. From new house construction to rehabs, from placing deserving families in affordable homes to adapting existing homes to accommodate special needs, your donations make what we do possible.

On December 16th, Steuben County Habitat for Humanity will be hosting a home dedication for the DiBucci family. Thanks to the efforts of our homeowner family, as well as the volunteers and staff of Habitat for Humanity, we’ve completed another safe, secure, sustainable home for a deserving family. The DiBucci family are excited to have a warm home, an affordable mortgage, and a place to grow their young family.
